Playing Catch-up

I have been trying to finish processing roughly 8GB of photos this weekend so I haven't had much time to shoot. I was waiting for some files to transfer, and took a few pics of things on my desk with the IR camera. A couple snapshots turned into grabbing my desk lamp, a flash and a diffuser (white paper).

Cool Morning

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Things have been crazy crazy around here. I'm just now getting to edit the images from 2 weeks ago, and I haven't gotten to the Nikon party images yet.

This week will be beach photos and maybe a few more from the Miami skyline and Jungle Island.

Photo info: D200, Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens, and an ND gradient filter over the lens (which caused the vignetting in the image).

Flamingo Lake

Infrared photo at Jungle Island. Tonight we are going to a party sponsored by Nikon at the Opium Garden club to check out the D3, D300, and all of their new gear for 2008. Should be a lot of fun. There's also an open bar the whole night...

Infrared photo of a Sausage Tree at Jungle Island. Its hard fruit can weigh up to 15lbs. The encyclopedia says to carefully select the planting site for this tree... duh.

Infrared Downtown

Here's another infrared city shot. This one is pretty much straight out of the camera. I was shooting JPEG instead of RAW files today.

We went to Jungle Island today, and the weather was so nice (sunny and mid 70s all day long.) I brought the IR camera and took a lot of pictures. I'll post a complete gallery on Picasa when I finish processing the photos from yesterday's shoot. I spent 9 hours shooting furniture in a warehouse when I really wanted to be outside in this fantastic weather.

The Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. This was a fun little outing. After climbing up nearly 90 feet of stairs I started to feel the spiral stairway swaying back and forth -- all of this right after the ranger was telling us how the builder made the walls a lot thinner than the designer specified. You can read more about the park at their official website.

Head of the Creek Regatta

At least I think it was the Head of the Creek Regatta. I woke up and saw a bunch of people gathered on the bridge outside. I grabbed my camera and tele, and saw some rowing crews go by. I might have gotten some good shots from the bridge, but it was a lazy Sunday that didn't include leaving the apartment.

Another Miami Sunset

I hope you guys aren't getting sick of these sunset photos. This one is best viewed large on black (which BTW you can click the image in every post for a large version). Everyday there seems to be something different to capture, whether it's color, clouds, composition etc. I'm having fun working with the same subject since I've been mostly homebound for the past month with my injury.

Waverunner

This brings back a memory of my wife and I on a waverunner we had in Tampa. We were out at Clearwater Beach and she hit a wave going so fast I floating off the back and skipped off the water. The whole thing was like slow motion. These things turn on a dime too -- just ask Charles.

Doctor Visits

So I went to the doctor today for another followup on my broken collarbone. Good news is I don't need surgery. The bone has started to reattach, but with some overlap. I still can't raise my hand much higher than my head. I have to get full range of motion before my next visit or I will need a lot of therapy. The doctor gave me some exercises to do everyday. Once I get the full range of motion back I can start swinging a golf club. This is the longest I have been away from the golf course in almost 5 years. I did have to cancel a free golf trip to Scottsdale, Arizona in November. Scottsdale has been on my list of must visit golf destinations.

Anyway, here's the pic of the day. My nurse was showing off her tattoo for the infrared camera. I didn't bring any off camera flashes so I used an examination light for the side lighting.

The water color here never gets old. And the magic hour of sunlight doesn't hurt either.

Sunset

Supertelephoto image of the sunset the other night. It was seconds before the sun disappeared from view.

I changed the image links so when you click the small images it takes you to a larger version on a dark background.

Sunrise

I got up this morning and saw the sun coming up and creating some incredible colors. I ran (as fast as I can move with a broken clavicle) to get my camera, but I had to swap the lens and the battery because of the time lapse thing I tried the day before.

Once I got setup, these are the colors I was able to capture. It was literally minutes between beautiful colors on the clouds, to what I shot, to just the sun beaming in your face and flat light on the clouds.

There was actually some nice surf out there today too. I sooo wish I was recovered enough to get out there and do some body boarding. Miami Beach is usually flat, but this morning it looked like some pretty organized knee to waist high waves.

Tomorrow I will post tonight's sunset photo. Not a photo of the sunset lighting up the sky nicely, but the sunball itself -- way cool.

Time Lapse Photography

I was doing some testing for a project at work last night and thought I'd post the results. 246 frames shot at the lowest setting on my Nikon D200 using the interval shooting mode set for 30 second intervals. I let it run for a few hours then edited it in Adobe Premiere, added a little finger tapping bassline I recorded a while back.

It looks like this lightning bolt hit the balcony near the top of the building in the background. I hope no one was home.

Going Away for the Weekend

Since the last post was ultralights over the water, I thought ships and yachts on the water would be appropriate today. Shot from high up with a 300mm f/4 Nikkor lens.

Ultralight, Ultralow

We were down at the beach and this guy comes buzzing by right off the deck. I thought the Coast Guard helicopter goes by low. Too bad I only had my IR camera with me.

Miami Beach Community Church

Infrared photo of the Miami Beach Community Church on Lincoln Road. The church opened in 1921. My office is right near this church, and I grabbed this shot the first day I got my camera back from being modified for IR. Lincoln Road is a really neat place to hang out if you are in the area.

Floating

I went out a while back to try and capture the shuttle launch, but couldn't see anything from down here. Back in Tampa the launches were still easy to see in the late afternoons and evenings. Since I was sitting out there with my Nikkor 300 f/4 I ended up shooting a bunch of gulls and terns. Here's my favorite from that day.

My buddy Charles is in town visiting from Tampa. Here he is blogging while I fire 2 flashes in his face.

1 Vivitar 285 at 1/4 power bounced off of the ceiling to light the foregound, 1 SB-600 at 1/16 power with diffuser behind the notebook screen aimed at his face. Shutter and aperture were set to balance the sunset and strobes.

There were two cats hanging out on the roof of this old building. See if you can find the second cat in this smaller photo shot with a wider lens.

Don't forget tomorrow night's full moon will be rising dead east around 8pm GMT -5. This shot was with a 300mm f/4 lens and a tripod on the beach.

Kiteboarders

Today is a double shot of photos. Kiteboarding, also called Kite Surfing, uses a large parachute-like kite, a harness and a board that resembles a wakeboard. These guys were getting some serious air that looked like 20ft off the water.

High Rise Row

Next to the large crane in the back middle of the photo is the Deauville Hotel. It was there in 1964 The Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan show for CBS.

This photo is made up of 9 exposures from 1/2 - 30 seconds each, then combined in a process called HDR (high dynamic range).

A1A Panoramic in Infrared

A view of A1A (Collins Ave.) and Allison Island using an infrared modified digital camera. I stitched the 4 images, taken with a Sigma 10-20mm lens, using Adobe's Photoshop CS3.
